TOLEDO, OH — On December 1, Saint Ursula Academy inducted 11 new members into the National Honor Society. Each has maintained a cumulative 3.980 GPA and can not miss too many days to achieve decent attendance to be qualified though they still have much more to do.
Once the minimum requirements have been met, Mr. Dennis Maas, the moderator of the NHS, provides several forms for the student to complete if she wants to join the NHS.
The qualifying student also writes an essay about the four pillars of the NHS, Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character. As well as the different services she has completed, what she has volunteered with and what she has been involved in.
“We read each essay twice, at least twice,” says Mr. Maas.
After the student nominee submits the essay, meeting the requirements and filling out the forms, a council of faculty members votes on whether or not a student should be inducted.
If a student does not get into the NHS, they can appeal the decision as the council does not have to say why they did not accept the student. The student can appeal to the principal within three days of the denial, and the principal can make the decision to override the vote or not.
Upon being inducted, the student begins her many responsibilities. NHS members are required to work raffles at home sporting events, tutor students in The Learning Commons, and complete individual service projects all while maintaining the original qualifications.
“The four (officers) work pretty closely so it’s not too much extra work for anyone,” said NHS Student President Bella Smith.
The NHS students also serve as role models for younger students and exemplify what it means to serve others and maintain high academic standing.
