TOLEDO, OH – Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11. This day is celebrated around the country and it is a day taken to honor and respect all those who have made significant sacrifices for our country.
SUA is no different in that regard.
Each year, a 60-minute assembly is held in order for students to not only become more educated on the topic but to learn about ways their community, and themselves, can become involved in honoring veterans.
This year Steve Schult, the president of Flag City Honor Flight, spoke at SUA’s assembly. Flag City Honor Flight is a volunteer-run organization that takes multiple groups of veterans to Washington D.C. each year, all expenses paid, to see the veteran memorials.
Schult spoke about the organization and the impact it has had on the veterans in our community. He shared videos from news outlets that showcased the reactions and sentiments from the veterans who take part in the Honor Flight.
He ended his speech by sharing how students at SUA can get involved in the trips, including attending welcome home celebrations or chaperoning a veteran on the flight.
“I think it comes down to the saying our speaker talked about, freedom isn't free,” said Amy Muszynski, the Social Studies Department Chair. “I think so many students today forget the fact that people needed to sacrifice for us to have the life that we have.”
SUA’s own social studies teacher, Garrett Box, is actually a veteran himself.
"Veteran's day is the remembrance of everyone who has served, who has made a sacrifice. Maybe not in death, but in life and the sacrifice of time,” said Mr. Box.
SUA finds it important to create a special and loving environment for those who used to serve in the military to show they are not only appreciated at SUA, but they are appreciated by all those who live in the United States.
SUA faculty and students found this year’s assembly to be very informative, interesting, and emotional. This is a long lasting tradition that SUA will continue to do, and will continue to have a different speaker at each assembly to share their story and experiences about Veterans Day.
